Palm Sunday

On Sunday of “the Passion” week, Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time and on his way to the cross. In this week we have; the cleansing of the Temple, his authority being questioned, signs of the end described, Judas’ betrayal, the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, the arrest and then the trial.

The “way of the Cross” is a difficult road to take in trying to understand life and death. For the Apostle Paul it was either the “picture of foolishness” or the “panorama of power.” (I Cor. 1:18)

The Gospel of John - Unity and Prayer

John 17 provides us with a detailed portrait of Jesus’ communion and intercession with God the Father? Jesus is the incarnate Son who is returning to His Father via a painful death on the cross? With the hour at hand” Jesus focuses on bringing glory to the Father and prays that His followers” in consequence of His death and exaltation” will be preserved from evil and unified together in God? Jesus has manifested the name of God in perfect submission and obedience. He has glorified the Father on earth in accomplishing all the work the Father gave him. Now Jesus prays for his disciples that are sent into the world, a world in control of the evil one. Certainly we have a high priest who is a perfect intercessor, bestowing to us all the grand benefits that the Father and Son share.

The Gospel of John - Forgiveness

Most people in our world understand the concept of “evil” or “wrong” or “sin.” It is the origin and cure that we argue over. As followers of Jesus Christ it is critical for us to understand and know Jesus in ways that make a difference in our lives and the lives of those around us.

In our journey with Jesus we are constantly able to hear Him converse with people about evil and it’s cure. Sometimes the cultural differences make it hard for us to get at the heart of application for us today.

The Gospel of John - Bread of Heaven

Bread of Heaven - Dr. Vince McFarland

Every human is at times consumed by the need for the “staples of life.” Usually we think of “bread and water” or today it may be some “food and drink.” After that we get into a higher level of staples; health, wealth, love and hope.

As Jesus interacted with these real kinds of people, he tried to get them to get to the real staple of life. This life was “eternal” and would be the ultimate provision.

Each of us at times have had our struggles with hunger, thirst, illness, a lack of resources, relationship problems and a loss of hope. We are no different than the crowds that followed Jesus way back then!

The Church has always held physical and spiritual needs in a “healthy tension.” Some have helped us to see that giving a fish isn’t as important as teaching someone to fish; or some kind of take on that principle. Some have also said it is hard to teach someone that has “hunger pains.”

The Gospel of John - A New Birth

John the Baptizer has used baptizing and teaching to reveal Jesus as the Messiah to Israel. “Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world!” Jesus calls some followers; Peter, Andrew, Phillip and Nathanael. Does his first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana; it revealed his glory and the followers put their faith in him. Cleansing of the Temple of marketers. At the Passover in Jerusalem he does more miracles and people believe in his name.

Do Not Be Afraid!-He Appears Through the Virgin Birth

Our reminder each week of Advent is “Do not be afraid!” Fear is a common struggle for us all on some level. Everyone has had their heroes; men or women who overcame their fears and accomplished some great feat. Fear stops us not only from greatness, but most of us, from just living life with peace and security.

One of the common phrases that God uses to his followers is “Do no be afraid!” He did that with people in Israel. He did that with the earthly parents of Jesus (Joseph and Mary; Mt. 1:20, Lk. 1:30). It was also said to the Shepherds as they saw the Angels (Lk. 2:10).

Thanksgiving Proclamation

It is the duty of nations as well as of men to owe their dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord.
We know that by His divine law, nations, like individuals, are subject to punishments and chastisements in this world. May we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land may be a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins; to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people?
We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.

Imagine How to Invest

Imagination: the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful. Last week we focused on our imagination and how GOD can use it.

Imagination without implementation doesn’t accomplish anything! A good idea is only beneficial when it is acted upon. This is true in spiritual things as well. We can pray, listen, and wait. When the “idea” comes we have to obey and invest. Sometimes we joke that pigs invest a lot more in breakfast than chickens do!
